I always describe the Royal Rumble as 30 men in bathing suits pretending to fight each other and to this point no one has ever told me that this doesn’t at least somewhat sound entertaining.

Everyone I know into pro wrestling is one of the gayest people I know.

Granted, nearly everyone I know is pretty gay…

Interestingly enough, I know multiple queer fans of wrestling. They enjoy the storylines despite the cheese factor and appreciate the skill involved in a lot of the moves, considering it as its own kind of performance art. Like maybe you’re not winning any Oscars for selling moves, but when you look at things like the Tombstone Piledriver, which are so difficult to pull off both convincingly and safely that use was restricted for a while to just two wrestlers, I can understand that.

I have, however, never encountered a single wrestling fan who did not hate Vince McMahon’s guts.

I always thought of it like porn.

There’s minimal plot to explain why the guy in a leather banana hammock is mad at the guy in a spandex banana hammock and vest. If you’ve never been to a ballet, other than the ring, the set, and not singing the interludes, very little is different.

I honestly love the athleticism. Though, I prefer watching the ladies jump around. Their outfits are more interesting, anyway.

This is exactly how I tend to think about it. It’s like the plot in fighting games. It’s just used to ferry the audience from one fight to the next. The actual pretext doesn’t really matter that much, because that’s not why the audience is there. The amount of sheer athleticism that gets displayed on a weekly basis is honestly astounding.

Sure, pro wrestling is fake. But there is no way to fake a hit like this. The fact that those men didn’t leave on stretchers puts them on par with stuntmen.

I think it takes asking the question of “what is faddle and what’s not?” Jumping off the top of the ropes onto a folding table isn’t fake. The reasons why, sure.

I used to love shonen and hate pro wrestling but had a friend who loved it.

After giving it a fair shake, I gotta admit it’s the same damn thing, and I was a muppet.

What fucking part of that is art? Do you people just think that all media is automatically art?

It is okay to be entertained, have fun. Just don’t put your fun entertainment in the same category as The fucking Odyssey or a goddamn Rothko.

And you think wrestling is the space where artful stunts are happening? Be for real.

Kitsch isn’t an insult. A lot of things we love are kitsch. It’s just a designator between that which used the techniques and skills of art to create that which entertains but does not meet the trappings of art. Hubble miniatures are kitsch. Most sitcoms are kitsch. And wrestling is absolutely, 100% kitsch.

But you’re basically saying “I’ve never seen a good example of pro wrestling being art, so it must not exist.”

If it’s not your thing, that’s fine, but going out of your way to say “this entire genre is actually lesser than REAL art” is pretty silly. It’s judgemental and also pretty close minded. It’s what I used to do as a teenager.

What is the subtextual message of wrestling? What greater point of the human condition does it point to?

Saying fast food isn’t haute cuisine isn’t being close-minded, it’s being accurate. Same shit applies here.

You aren’t being open minded, you’re lacking discernment.

And again, this isn’t even a value assessment. I’m not going to lie, I personally think wrestling is stupid, but I’m not insulting it by calling it kitsch. We all love tons of things that are kitsch; kitsch is not a negative. It’s just not art, holy fucking shit, people.

Wrestling is just failed stuntmen performing stories written by failed screenwriters. I judge wrestling fans the exact same as I judge people who recreationally eat glue.
