I went to open the new container of butter at work and saw that someone else got there before me. Who does this! :'( Needless to say, I smoothed it out. I’ll get to see what it looks like when I’m back in on Monday.

Who does… what? What am I missing here? Somebody took some butter… weren’t they allowed to? Was it yours and they used some without asking? I’m really lost.

Not sure why this would be infuriating. Someone just used the butter, whats wrong with that?

Nah, OP probably likes to scrape a thin layer of butter off the top. This softens it a bit and makes it easier to spread straight out of the fridge onto toast.

I’m not sure I’m understanding. It’s margarine or spreadable butter in a tub. How is someone supposed to use it? If I need a could tablespoons of it, what should I do that isn’t that?

Like I said in another comment, I thought I’d share something I thought could be relatable to some people. I thought it was pretty innocent and I didn’t realise I would ruffle so many feathers. :(

Thank you. I’m not a stickler for a lot of things, and this butter thing was 1/10 on my “infuriating” scale, so it’s pretty mild. This just got way more attention than I expected and didn’t expect people to question my mental status based on a single photo/post, haha.

Most definitely this. I share butter with others, there’s no problem. 1/10 on my “infuriating” scale, it’s not like I can’t close the lid and have it on my mind for the rest of the day. I’ve got way more important things to do!

Have you ever had a tub of butter? You just slide the butter knife across the top and it creates a thin slice of butter. You don’t scoop a blob of it. Just think about it for a second.

What’s wrong with that? Keeping margarine level when you use it is not something I’ve ever seen done before.

Side note - margarine is not butter! It’s a dyed oil product made to mimic butter.

    Butter doesn’t come in tubs.

I can’t remember. I’m sure it said “spreadable butter”, so it’ll have vegetable oils in it to make it soft.

Oh, hell yes! That’s one place where butter is much more enjoyable than any of the margarine varieties.

Don’t get me wrong, margarine (despite its many drawbacks) has its place in cooking. But butter is my preference as a fat spread. You get a less single note flavor for one thing. Since the taste doesn’t come from a chemical being added, you get more complexity even with shitty butter (mass produced butter is usually produced by cows fed very limited diets).

It also spreads differently. When cold, it spreads difficult, compared to margarine. But this isn’t a bad thing in all cases. When room temp, or manipulated to soften it, it’s easier than margarine. But the key is that you get a slightly less uniform spread. While this may or may not be a benefit to everyone, it does lead to the experience being varied. Margarine tends to spread very evenly in comparison.

What else should I do with it than spread it on a bread?
Besides obviously cooking with it, but in a bread, yeah, it’s getting spreaded

I bake a lot of biscuits because bought ones all contain palm oil nowadays. I just make a 3-2-1 dough and add cocoa, or I put jam on top.

Sounds very good, especially with getting rid of palm oil

We’re just not so sweet here and only sometimes get an urge, but that’s not enough for baking…

To only thing I did were hash brownies, but that was quite some time ago… ;-)

Is the infuriating part supposed to be that someone got to the butter before you? Or is it that you don’t like how it was scooped? What is the “correct” way if this is “incorrect”? Genuinely curious.

No, I don’t mind if someone got there before me. That actually never crossed my mind!

I always thought of it this way: because the top is always exposed to air, it starts to go rancid and harden before anything else below it does. The more you dig, the more butter is exposed to air. I do not go through a tub very fast on my own.

Also, skimming layers makes it easier to spread, especially on soft breads and buns.

Can I assume it’s the weird little flipped up part that’s the problem, not the fact of it having been scooped into? Because while it wouldn’t bother me, it would mean that little section is more exposed to air and that can be a negative over time. Oxidation is rarely a good thing in that situation.

If it’s just that it isn’t level, I don’t get the mild infuriation tbh.

I posted a picture of my loaded dishwasher to show people how my adult daughter just didn’t know how to do it. The responses were 50/50, half were annoyed at me for posting it, the other half annoyed at her because she’s so lousy at it LOL

Thank you for your support! It was only mildly annoying for someone to dig their knife in like they were stabbing it and wedging out a piece.

Haha, that’s great! There’s definitely a way to stack dishes to make it efficient, I agree. I admit, I’m not great, so I won’t make a post about me mildly infuriating myself and others, lol.
