Would love to see them offer a flagship phone. I usually prefer to buy the best thing available at the time and then forget about phones for the next 5 or so years. Ideally also would be great if they were to focus harder on privacy and eventually I could install GrapheneOS on them, but that’s not happening either :(
Very curious to see the linux support.
I will be buying on day one to test this out and get an image ready.
I’m really grateful for all the people that donated so the price is partially covered.
I’ve only heard about the 6+ through your posts. I find what you’re doing so fucking interesting, and you actually got me interested in getting one through your shop once it’s ready. So thanks for the great work!
That’s pretty cool of you. Good luck!
It’s a shame that none of these privacy oriented/right to repair phones have a headphone jack.
I didn’t used to have to care, but now they’re tracking people by Bluetooth signatures so…
Yup. I have FP6. I crammed usb-c dac into my earphone’s case. Can’t have it all I guess. But still a big fan.
Do you remember which DAC you bought for it? I only have a non-DAC adapter that annoyingly activates Google Assistant when I plug it in and that I’ve been meaning to replace.
It says TempoTec DSD on it. I bought it on Aliexpress 5 years ago
Can’t you just use usb-c headphone?
Yes you can, if they come with in-built DAC.
Right, apparently USB-C still has support for analog audio signal but not many support it.
So USB-C headphones have their own DAC. But using a DAC does have advantages because you avoid noise, and they can be really tiny.
Jolla Phone has the other half, which I guess you could use to add a headphone jack
Because they want you to buy the Fairbuds.
Wake me up when Fairphone does not use USB 2.0 speeds anymore…
You can always get the FP5, that still has USB 3 speeds. Honestly, the 6 and 6+ aren’t a huge upgrade over the 5 (and in some senses like the USB speeds a downgrade)
You can’t necessarily, they don’t sell it anymore. You have to hope resellers have stock in your region.
Oh OK, that sucks. Oh well.
Also, the FP5 has display output via the USB-C connector, which the FP6 does not have.
That’s great for connecting to a hotel’s TV when travelling. Some people also use it as a desktop replacement, but not really my thing.
At the moment it’s not great as a desktop replacement, but that’s mostly because of Android IMO, which just isn’t great at that stuff at all. My hope is that some time into the future Linux for mobile improves to a point where it’s usable for me as a daily driver, then it might just be useful as a desktop replacement. Because here’s the thing: the FP5’s chipset can power two displays, and AFAICT if the internal display isn’t used, it can power two external displays - it’s just Android which doesn’t support it. If that’s the case, it could be quite the productivity machine on Linux.
Mobile Linux is pretty usable. Pretty much the only thing I’m missing in Mobian is the patch that enables call audio routing, which will be there in a couple days or weeks at most.
I thought they still didn’t have VoLTE up and running, among others? For some I can’t access their wiki at the moment.
It also supports Wi-Fi and 5G for file transfers, which are faster than USB 2.0 and come with the added benefit of not needing a cable at all.
USB 2.0 also means you can’t hook it up to a monitor, though… WiFi and 5G don’t quite cut it there.
usb 3.0 or die
This triggers me. I mean, it’s a nice proof of concept and a small skit for the rest of the industry by regularly announce and show that it is possible to produce repairable and somehow better smartphones. It’s like selling organic fruit and vegetables on the local farmers market and attract “conscious” folks that are already trying not to buy food from the grocery store.
Do they think their project, their vision and business model will loose the relatively small attention from a broader range of (possible) costumers if they just pause and use more capacities to support the devices already on the market? Do they fear cuts in their supply chain, because its difficult to re-establish it once the people producing for/with them turn away and work for others?
With the right to repair and othe regulations their (former?) unique features will become a obstactle to persist in the market in which others, the mainstream manufacturers, are getting stronger.
I do not need a new smatphone every two years, not even a somehow fair one. Just produce spare parts for all your models and release everything related as open source, making it possible to run even longer with new(est) android versions or just Linux.
Repairability does not mean stagnation, if they keep offering spare parts for older models i would want them to produce phones with the best hardware possible as fast as possible.
Why would introducing new models retract from the mission? if spare parts are continued to be offered existing owners lose nothing?

Why? For what? Ongoing tech “improvements” like this are irresponsible nowadays. As of today we aleady accomplished much progress as humans, but the need to pause, rest, recover urgently is constantly challenged.
Let us break the cycle and finally become sufficient. Especially but not exclusively within consumer electronics.
if spare parts are continued to be offered existing owners lose nothing?
We lose finite resources, the ones of the world and our own. Including spare time. We exchange it for a distraction from reality in 8K and labor that just powers the hamster wheels which probably most of the people didnt want to enter.

Why and for what? because 50% more memory is a huge improvement, waydroid on a 8GB budget gets tight, while it fits much more comfortable in 12.
I’m not sure what to say to your other points as its a ideology i don’t subscribe to, imo stagnation will get us nowhere.
I am not entirely sure if we talk about persistent or volatile memory here (english is not my first language, if its persistent the term storage fits better).
What I do not get is why there is a need for more in the first place? What makes waydroid so “hungry”?
I do not pledge for stagnation, but as progress comes with a price, I do see no need to run forward, hustling even. Instead of going slower and catch up with the people who do not even have internet access nowadays, but want it. Or the ones who are using stuff thats too slow or small for others. Lets try to align access and usage of technology worldwide. Everybody deservers progress and the experience of the advantages technology is offering.
We are talking about the volatile memory here, the LPDDR5 DRAM
Waydroid is a android container for wayland systems, what makes it so memory intensive that its basically running an full android userland, which normally is fine but since now you’re running it atop your exisitng userland the total memory usage is much higher since now you are running 2 userlands instead of just one.
I am not that much into tech, but that reads like this being more of a gimmick and a niche. It is great to be able to adapt technology to ones need, but this seems to be something that average users do not think of and is far beyond detailed customization.
That said I think getting infantilised by the manufacturer or vendor, however, is annoying. In contrast curiosity and play instinct can be fun. Having fun is possbible even by being sufficient. I watch older television series, play older games, read older books. I have so much to experience without a subscription to streaming service, buying the newest gaming consoles or computing with the newest devices.
Fairphone already does pretty much what you want - keep spares available for an insane time. They don’t have spares for the 3/3+ anymore but for the 4 which was released like 5 years ago.
And we don’t know why the 6+ exists yet, it could be a simple stupid reason like Qualcomm deciding they don’t want to produce the old SoC for as long anymore.
Personally the fact that we can even get what is basically ‘just’ a mainboard upgrade for a smartphone does speak for Fairphone IMHO
So, we consider 5 years an “insane” amount of time now? My iPhone 13 mini is that old and it’s not even end of life yet.
Hey would you be so kind and direct me to the place where Apple sells genuine spares for the 13 mini?
I’m not saying 5 years is a long time to support a phone - Apple does really well in terms of software support - I am saying having genuine spares available for that time is.
I’m not saying Apple sells spares, I’m saying 5 years is not enough time to even need them (if you’re careful with your phone). The whole idea of a repairable phone for me is that I can repair it 10 years after the fact, at least. Otherwise - I just don’t see the value, if I’ll have to buy a new phone anyway.
Kinda, but also I checked the original announcement - they promised 5 years of software and hardware support. And they had spares for 7 years as they just stopped selling them like 3 weeks ago. For a phone they stopped selling in 2022 (after it launched in 2019). IMHO that’s a fair support time. Mind you - again that was 7 years ago when a 5 year software support was still groundbreaking as far as I recall.
I’d love it if devices lasted even longer. But with the current smartphone world I’m more than willing to hand it to FP - it’s been ‘fair’.
7 years is definitely better, wonder how long the spares for 4 will last

Sad that a company that markets itself on being more ethical then the competitors is still on Musk’s X…
They do still need to sell stuff. To do that you have to go where the people are.
There’s also lots of people on pornhub, do you think FP posts there, too?
No, but I think you can figure out why the comparison doesn’t work by yourself
