Futurology@futurology.today•US researchers have developed the world's smallest fully programmable robots, on a scale of 0.2-0.5 millimeters, the same size as microorganisms that cause diseases like dysentery and schistosomiasis.English
5·6 days agoThink that sounds far-fetched? Evolution figured it out with single-cell organisms 2 billion years ago, and they haven’t faltered since.
The “brain” that is in these robots is incredibly simple and does not have the capability to learn. While it feels like tech is breaking boundaries every day, having any serious amount of computational power that simulates learning at this small of a scale is incredibly far off. The fear mongering is not necessary.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you automated 95% of your job, but still had to report to an office/cubicle, what would you do with your (40hrs)time?English
1·15 days agoImplement a CPU, then a GPU, then start designing weirder, domain-specific architectures.
I mean, I like Longlegs, even though a lot of people were upset by the 3rd act. I think this movie is outside of that “guilty pleasure” area. The Monkey knows what it is and does it well.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What fictional character do you wish was real?English
20·2 months agoSam Raimi’s version of Spider-Man. He’s an agent of the common man, and obviously someone with super powers would be amazing. However he isn’t so powerful that he couldn’t be subdued if he were to become evil. The only problem is I don’t live in NYC…

Linux@lemmy.ml•my reason why you should use KDE+Krohnkite instead of WMsEnglish
24·2 months agoBiggest con of KDE + Krohnkite (to me) is no text-based config. I really have no desire to pour through the GUI to set up all my keybinds. I’ve tried this setup before, and honestly I mostly like it. However anytime I want to change something I just hate having to click through a menu with my mouse. The search bar helps, but often you’ll spend a lot of time guessing what the devs decided to name a setting. I went back to Sway and have no regrets. Though I’ll admit I wish there was something that was basically Sway with the benefits you mentioned here.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Your entire life gets turned into a movie / short series by the best filmmaker in the world with unlimited budget, do you like your movie? How do you think people would rate it?English
8·2 months agoMiddle-class white person grows up to do middle-class white people things. PhD portion of the story seemed promising but fell short of expectations. At least the lead couple is kind of funny. 2/5 stars

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Americans, what do typically have for breakfast?English
7·2 months agoWhole wheat toast topped with peanut butter, sorghum syrup, and bananas. The toast has fiber and the peanut butter has protein. The bananas and the tiniest drop of sorghum add enough sweetness to round out the flabor but contain less added sugar than most cereal.

Programming@programming.dev•The illegible nature of software development talentEnglish
8·3 months agoOK, but not everyone produces technical debt at the same rate and not everyone takes responsibility for what they produce, so the point is still relevant.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Comparing a RISC and a CISC with similar hardware organization (1991)English
1·3 months agoI don’t really see how what you detailed in your summary connects to your thesis. How are things like more registers and less cycles for branches related to using RISC over CISC? It reads more like the microarchitecture of the MIPS is better rather than the approach of the ISA.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do gender roles have a stranglehold on heterosexual relationships, or does social media just make it feel that way?English
6·3 months agoI think the real reason you haven’t dated a girl is you’ve never gotten to know any. You wouldn’t think like this otherwise. A majority of couples I know have equal relationships with emotionally vulnerable guys. Your last statement on touching grass fits the bill.

Cooking @lemmy.world•I think my wife is trying to tell me something.English
9·4 months agoCleaning also takes less time, especially if you include all the planning that goes into cooking. Then if you consider the amount of time it’d take for the same meal to be made by other members of the household, you start to see that cleaning is actually a bargain. You also have to remember that even when you enjoy cooking, it is stil exhausting. They have less energy to clean than those who didn’t cook.
Obviously there is a limit. If the cook is making an excessive mess due to doing some particularly fancy cooking out of ambition, they should probably help out. But if you regularly reap the benefits of someone else’s skill in the kitchen, yes, you should help clean.

movies@piefed.social•‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Becomes Netflix’s No. 4 Most Popular English-Language Movie EverEnglish
11·5 months agoThe idea was solid, but execution was poor. Super fast pacing, storyline is very predictable and basically all development of the characters is told not shown. They basically choose to have the main conflict be magically resolved instead of writing a resolution. What really shines is the animation. The humor is pretty solid too. There’s a better version of this movie, but it’s not the version we got.

Programming@programming.dev•Ranking programming languages by energy efficiency (2021)English
17·5 months agoThe amount of CPU time compiling code is usually negligible compared to CPU time at runtime. Your comparison only really works if you are comparing against something like Rust, where less bugs are introduced due to certain guarantees by the language.
Regarding “language constructs” it really depends on what you mean. For example using numpy in python is kind of cheating because numpy is implemented in C. However using something like the algorithm libraries in Rust woulf be considered fair game since they are likely written in Rust itself.

I personally love Killer7, but I won’t pretend that most people would enjoy it. However the soundtrack is great.
