hello! I’m Chloé, a nerdy ace trans gal :3
this is my lemmy account that I use sometimes. I am also on the microblogging side of the fedi at @carotte@toot.cat :3

game preservation
not really a technology per se, but i’m really in awe of the people doing decompilations of older games now, and i kinda wish i had the knowledge (and time) to contribute

hopefully the biggest mods can prepare in advance, the article says a few versions will be released with both OpenGL and Vulkan support, until their Vulkan renderer can reach the stage where it’s good enough to fully replace OpenGL. i’ve heard that the Sodium devs knew (or intuited) of the Vulkan switch in advance, so they already have some work done to support it.
RIP shaders tho, i don’t envy shader developers rn

i’d rather the genocide collaborator lose but maybe that’s just me
they fixed this in today’s snapshot, baby zombies can once again fit through 1 block gaps lol
fedora KDE has been pretty painless for me, and if you want something that’s still ubuntu based, kubuntu looks good too
libs in this thread, having already settled for mediocrity 2 years before there’s an election lol
like yea guys, keep putting shitass unappealing candidates and blaming their loss on scary internet communists who, as we all know, actually account for most of the non-voting population in the US. it worked so well the last checks notes 2 times.
as someone else said: now his time travel experiment is worthless, cause there’s a very good reason no one from the future wanted to go party with him

i didn’t have any paywall, maybe it’s a regional thing? here’s a version that shouldn’t have it.
anyways, here’s a screenshot of the Relooted review i talked about. if you check the game’s negative reviews and sort by most pertinent, it’s the 3rd one. it was here yesterday, and despite me reporting it, it’s still here today, and in fact has been here since february 11th. as time of writing, it has 373 people who found it useful, and 115 who found it funny. some of the comments under that review are critical, but most just say “based” and the like.

it’s an anecdotal evidence, but as you said, “you can find articles and reddit posts claiming this same exact thing going back years”, doesn’t that mean it’s a recurring problem?

as the article mentions, if you’d bothered to read it, steam rarely enforces their guidelines, which is the problem here

for a more recent example, the negative reviews under Relooted are fucking sickening. one of the top ones is a joke making fun of George Floyd’s death.
what does steam do? nothing. valve is one of the most profitable companies per employee out there, and they have no pressure from investors to botch their work, they could absolutely moderate.
they actively choose not to, because despite what bootlickers on lemmy would have you believe, gabe newell is a libertarian dipshit who values “free speech” over the safety of marginalized people.

i disagree with you on the ethicalness of emulating current gen games, personally i think there’s nothing wrong with it, but regardless:
emulators for retro hardware often get their start while the console is still in production. for example, gamecube games nowadays are pretty expensive, so if you want to play them without breaking bank you’ll have to use an emulator, and the most mature by far is dolphin.
dolphin started being developed in 2003, while the gamecube was still the most recent nintendo console, and it grew from there. if dolphin started development in 2017, when nintendo discontinued the last console that could play wii & GC games natively, it would no doubt be far less capable today.
same goes for 3DS emulators like azahar, who descend from citra, which started development when the 3DS was recent.
nintendo here is not going after pirates, or even people who play legally backed up games, they’re going after emulator developers. even if it was unethical to emulate the switch now, stopping switch emulator development will ensure that switch emulation won’t be as good as it could be when it would stop being unethical.
in other words, it’s killing game preservation, or at least hampering it. that’s not good, even if you think piracy is unethical.

with cat /dev/urandom > mybook.txt i can write an entire novel in just a few seconds! i call it the infinite monkey method
in fact you better stop the command after a few seconds or else your computer will crash trying to open it
i believe they explicitly named it after the character in pulp fiction
personally i’m not blaming them too much for being a bunch of young assholes choosing an edgy name (reminder that it’s an ableist slur first and foremost) 30 years ago.
i am 100% blaming them for never changing it and outright refusing to change it.

to save you a click: it’s ethan klein (h3h3productions) and chris chan

the list is about to get longer!

i feel like i’m gonna be reposting this image for eternity
i get not wanting to call x by its old name (because people who do that sometimes do it to ignore what it has become), but don’t call this “deadnaming” please. it trivializes deadnaming and what it does.
corporations are not people, they don’t get to have deadnames.
be gay do crime etc etc
