Oh yes. Pepper spray. That’ll stop a determined aggressor.
(/s. It won’t. This drone is not for that. Probably for quelling student protest or something to that effect instead.)
(Anything but gun control, amirite?)
Anything but hiring human guards maybe?
Who am I kidding, the admin gets a kick back from the vendor for showcasing their tech. Money is always the answer in 'murica
Human guards would be more effective than the drone at stopping an active shooter; but they won’t stop active shooters from being active in the first place.
For that you need to attack the actual problems.
We have direct evidence that “trained” humans don’t help at all either. Uvalde.
Hammering a nail with a rock is a more effective solution than hammer a nail with a cucumber. Doesn’t mean the rock is a good solution.
And that should give you an idea of how bad drones in schools are.
Southeners… Southeners never change.
Putting aside all of the false positives and mission creep e.g. used on unruly 3rd graders, let’s imagine a real-world scenario where a shooter comes prepared with goggles and these drones simply blind every student in their immediate vicinity.
Who’s gonna be liable for those deaths?
Can we get them to open source the design?
Swap the pepper spray with black spray paint, and the targets from kids to flock cameras, and I think most people will pool money together to buy these things.
Some kid walking with a pen in their hand, SHOOTER, SEND DRONES!!
Later that day: our new system still needs testing bs statement.
Happens a few more times and an actual shooter shows up and nothing happens,
statement: system had to be taken down for testing/maintenance (and cost cutting because AI tokens expensive af) and unfortunately during that time a shooter appeared on the premises and we were unable to do anything.

To be fair, according to the article these drones are remote piloted, not AI controlled. So they probably won’t function because rent-a-cop Stu is taking a three hour long lunch break at the stripclub or passed out drunk under his desk.
So… how long until some kid discovers the login/password to this system is Admin/admin1234?
Speaking to Barron’s magazine, Oborski said King had observed the effectiveness of the technology during the war in Ukraine.
The next school shooters will just carry an extra melee weapon to swat down the drones.
Spicy!
