In fairness, most post effects work is farmed out to multiple firms on every movie. Not surprising he could be wrong about that.
What he’s guilty of is not demanding that work exclude AI so he was right in his assumptions.
OK, but wouldn’t he hear himself say “we’ll get it in post?”

Post effects haven’t been generative AI until more recently and it’s possible as a director he was unaware when they started creeping in to his work.
The director or producer doesn’t directly oversee each special effect as it’s created. They might see a midpoint and an end after discussing what they want. The entire point of farming out effects to other firms is to divide the work to get it done faster. Worrying about generative AI creeping in is a more recent development so him not assuming a company would use it for effects is not weird.
I am betting a bunch of effects companies have been using it more and more for years and have not been telling studios because why would they? If you’re in sales and you found a cheaper way to complete a contract you would not explain how to your customers, you would just bid lower on your contracts.
Now that there’s public outcry suddenly there’s reason to disclose its use, and I bet effects firms are reluctant to because they’ve been relying on it for years to get work done.
AI has been growing in effects work for at least a decade. Long before LLMs or generative AI ever creeped into the public mind.
TL; DR Until recently there’s been no reason for a Director or Producer to know exactly how the special effects sausage is made.
the leads of a project should be held accountable for how things are made though. if you hire a firm, and you don’t want them to use ai, you better put that shit in the contract. audiences want disclosure of how stuff is made. nobody wants to pay their hard earned money if it’s fake/stolen work

Oh yeah, with a modern production there’s no way he knows exactly what’s going on everywhere behind the scenes. Especially once animation gets involved, there’s just too many hands involved.

I don’t know the context for this specific movie or what they mean by AI assisted or whatever, but I have heard that nowadays, even if artists don’t use AI to directly create art, they still use it behind the scenes to do things like compose scenes.
Even if the claim is “no AI”, individual artists will still secretly use it to save time or money. Everything in the graphic art world is now AI assisted and we can’t get away from it. 😞
