Ungoogled Chromium my love. I’ve been using them for years now, both on Windows and Linux and I basically have no complaints.
For Android, if on Graphene you already have Vanadium! If not, Cromite is also pretty good since it has built in Ad-blocking.
I try to limit my Proton use to only their VPN, and after their comments I’m trying to decide between switching to AirVPN or doing my own VPN since I need portforwarding for torrenting. I switched from ProtonMail to Mailbox.org a while ago to not keep my eggs in one basket.
I think everyone highlighting the police is correct but also cherrypicking (for lack of a better statement). Like Tuta isn’t gonna go to jail for you either lol. All companies have to cooperate with the government in some form. I do agree that Proton should stop advertising like it won’t or that it’s failproof though. If they really cared, they would make guides on how to use their services in a way that gives little to no information to the police if demanded. And emphasizing that the email isn’t encrypted if the other user isn’t a ProtonMail account or using PGP.

4·5 days agoOr set up a listenbrainz.org account to get weekly recommendation playlist, check the accounts of people who listen to similar artists, and click through those addictive spider web charts that show you a bunch of artists who are similar to the one you’re listening to.
There’s also Rate Your Music, which I don’t have an account at but it still seems pretty good.

8·6 days agoYeah, I’m pressing X to doubt on this one because the website still only recommends Mastodon and Element, and the page literally talks about why federation and decentralized social media is vital to privacy and anti-censorship. They even have people in the forums talking about twitter frontends so you don’t have to actually go to the site. They even purposely try to avoid promoting their accounts on centralized media, the footer of every page only shows Mastodon, Matrix, Peertube, and Bluesky.
It’s privacyguides.ORG btw. Are you thinking of privacytools.io?

3·6 days agoYeah, I got 4 used 2TB hard drives on Amazon back in early 2024 with a $100 gift card and still had a few bucks left over, and now I see that you basically can’t find a single 2TB drive lower than $70…
I wish I started my homelab sooner…

Privacy@lemmy.world•We need to stop summarizing privacy policies (Reject Convenience)English
3·8 days agoThe point is to get an idea of the data that they absolutely collect. We can speculate all day about what they’re not mentioning, but we can safely assume they wouldn’t throw in shit that they don’t actually collect.
Privacy policies honestly are rarely worth reading. They are intentionally grossly encompassing, vague and unintelligible
Yesn’t. The whole point of this video was to go through a privacy policy and explain to people how to find certain terms and understand what they mean. It’s not hard to do ctrl + f and do basic keywords like “health”, “location”, “age”, “race”, etc.
Do I REALLY NEED this service? Because if ya do, it doesn’t matter what the PP says. And if ya don’t, just don’t do it. Assume you have 0 privacy, because 99% of the time they are collecting and selling every piece of data they can possibly collect about you.
Once again, that’s the point of the video. If you don’t need the service or determine it’s not worth the data they collect from you, then don’t download it. Congrats! You saved your data, which is what he wants. If you DO have to use the service, you know what kinds of data they’ll collect and you can go to the settings of the service or app to reduce what you give. No need to worry about user media being collected if you deny file permissions right? Hell you could go even deeper with apps like Exodus and Permission Manger X to figure out the exact trackers and permissions to disable.
The whole point of the video (and his channel in general) is to reduce the amount of blind ignorance going on with privacy. Knowledge is power, that’s why they hope people don’t read privacy policies. I now know what to look out for and how to reduce it. Would you rather sit in the dark afraid of what enemy you’re potentially fighting, or actually turn on the lights to see what it truly is?

2·13 days agoMy takeout had everything, even random shit I should’ve deleted forever ago lol. I’d just check for the most important pics (weddings, vacations, etc.) that you would actually be devestated to lose. You can always wait a month or so before deleting to verify your media transferred fine.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Whats a privacy friendly way of learning a new language?English
11·14 days agoAnki + Yomitan is the goat. Download some dictionaries of your target language, load them into Yomitan, and now you can search words on any website with selectable text and instantly make a flashcard out of the word. Watching a video in browser? Use asbplayer to load subtitles onto the video/movie and select the text from that too. Wanna watch not in browser? Use mpvacious with mpv.
Find yourself a card format you like and some cute addons (I use Ankimon [Pokemon]) for Anki so you don’t fall into that “it looks so dull!” trap because the SRS system it uses is no joke. I have years old vocab on there that I still remember, and medical students aren’t joking when they say it saved them.
I just love this app so much.

Technology@lemmy.world•Backblaze silently redefines 'unlimited' backups and users discover it's not backing up DB and OD — as firm leans heavier into AI storage services, changes could signal shift away from home backupsEnglish
6·17 days agoI’m asking as a genuine question, where or how should people backup large datastores? Also what counts as too large? I’ve heard Backblaze doesn’t cover NAS so i wouldn’t be able to backup my 2TB zfs RAID, but like is that too much?
I want to do 3-2-1 for my homelab to preserve all pictures in my immich and the backups of my LXCs and VMs, but I’m just not sure how to go about it, and I was considering archives of those files + backblaze…
What I want to do is set up an Arrstack, and I know I need to put Docker and maybe Portainer? I have no experience with Docker though.
I used DockSTARTer and TraSH Guides to set up a docker instance running the arr stack in a Debian VM. I still should take the time to learn more about it though.
I also want to put some basic things I and others can access remotely like a shopping list program, photo backups, period tracker, and DnD software. But I’m very afraid of exposing the server to the internet and it being hacked or such. I know there’s something called Tailscale but I’m not sure if that’s what I need.
As of now, it’s pretty much just me accessing my services, but I did use Netbird (similar to Tailscale) to make a VPN to my home network for my friends to access my minecraft server. My setup is jank though, a shared account for all my friends while I have my own. I definitely need to just use another method to host stuff so no account login sharing is being done.
I picked Tailscale to avoid major provider login (Google) and I plan to selfhost it one day…

World News@lemmy.world•JUST IN: Iran Ends Direct Talks With US After Trump Threatens to Destroy ‘Whole Civilization’English
5·28 days agoThe gun fetishists who don’t care about dead kids are the ones who voted for Trump. The ones who give a shit amd don’t want to come within 10 feet of a gun didn’t vote for him.
I’m so tired of the EU people paroting this. It’s ALWAYS been the crazy MAGA who love God and guns. It’s ALWAYS Democrats pushing for regulation.
If a majority of the country voted for him, then how is the minority supposed to overthrow both the gun sickos and the government? Nepal’s riota only succeeded because all of their young population was in agreeance that their government was corrupt. I can’t even get former friends to get off their ass to vote. A riot only works if enough people are backing it.
We would get fucking swiss cheesed in literal seconds by a police department let alone the military. It’d be a suicide mission. And at the end of the day Trump would still be kicking it and making fucking posts about the protesters and MAGAs mixed dead bodies. I hate MAGA conservatives, but I don’t want to kill them because I can understand that at the end of the day the person in power has no fucking skin in the game. We can shoot ourselves bloody all day, but Trump and his croonies will live just fine.
The January capitol riot only ended in little rioter casualties because they were white men and the administration wanted it to happen. This current admin has been insane from day one and would gladly open fire on protesters.
And even if we did kill him, there’s still a chain of succession? We killing the VP and the entire cabinet too? Nevermind the MAGA nuts that would run jnto the streets and start killing any minority or democrat in sight? These sickos threatened to bomb HBCUs after watching Charlie Kirk get shot and he was literally killed by a fellow Republican nutjob. They don’t need a good reason to get angry. Furthermore, who says violent overthrow will guarantee a better government? If you gained enough power to overthrow a government, who says the next won’t abuse it too? And once again more blood spills of those who aren’t calling the shots.
I love being constantly told on this site to go be a suicide shooter. I love everyone assuming we’re gun nuts. I love everyone assuming we all wanted this. I voted, I protest, I contact my reps, I tell my friends to vote, I boycott, I do as much as I can. But if I’m not out there threatening to bomb the White House and kill all Republican representatives then it’s worthless.
Anyway, we have a national strike coming up on May 1st. Minnesota already had a strike in January.

You know, I literally just read about this in my textbook, but I’m trying to cram the last of my classwork for finals so I glossed over it.
Thanks for the reminder, time to set up that PIN…
