      Hmm I think it would work a lot better if the colour transition was just by hue. As it stands, it looks too grey in the middle for my taste.

        I agree. There are many ways to blend colors and some tend to look better than others. The one in OP looks to be linear, which has the tendency to turn grey or brown near the 50:50 areas.

        Example. sRGB is the norm, which includes gamma correction.

        I don’t have a precise bead on when woke entered my lexicon, but it wasn’t really a thing until it became a rhetorical cudgel for the far right.
