Mushrooms, onions, spinach, basil, and roma tomatoes with marinara sauce and vegan “cheese.”

If any of you lemmy cuties happened to live near me I would absolutely make you a pizza 😊

I’m always down to have guests over for dinner, it’s my favorite thing!

I also made a barbecue pizza

Yep! Spicy pineapple, mushrooms, onions, garlic, jalapeño, and those fake bacon bits with a vegan “cheddar jack” and a hickory brown sugar barbecue sauce base

Unfortunately vegan ‘cheese’ doesn’t always melt well. Still tasted good though!

Our vegan cheese slices melt if you put some oil on them, but I don’t know how well it adheres to shredded.

I will say that I have several years experience as a pizza chef in 6 different restaurants and none of the Vegan pizzas we served used vegan cheese. They were just cheeseless pizzas. One restaurant I worked for actually made a pizza with hummus and roasted veg that was actually really tasty ( paprika, courgette and aubergine if I remember correctly). So you should try that.

As someone who has both worked at pizza shops and eaten a lot of what pizza shops think are ‘good’ vegan pizza, respectfully, pizza shops are some of the worst at developing vegan pizzas I’ve ever seen. Most homemade vegan pizzas are twice as good as what you can get out and about. They aren’t trying. They say to themselves “vegan cheese?! Nasty!” Then think they’re in any position to develop a good product.

The humus and roasted veg one was actually good. I’ve tried all the vegan cheese that was a at the time and iusing them would have ruined every pizza on the menu. I’m open to the possibility that vegan cheese might be a lot better outside of Norway, but the stuff available here is unpleasant in taste and texture, doesn’t melt properly if at all, and tends to cost more.

I’m not saying homemade pizza isn’t better than restaurant pizza, I’m saying that if you make the same pizza with the same toppings 3 times: one with cheese, one cheeseless, and one with vegan cheese substitute the vegan cheese substitute pizza will reliably be the worst and it doesn’t matter what toppings or sauce you use.

I’m not saying anything against vegan food generally. 2 of my favourite restaurants sell exclusively vegan food. I’m saying that if I personally went vegan I would give up on the Idea of eating cheese, because eating vegan cheese would make me a lot sadder than going without.

I could certainly try that, although I admit that to my amateur sensibilities it feels like it wouldn’t be a pizza without cheese 😅
