As an american, I support this. And don’t come at me about our currently policies, I hate them as well
I am disgusted that Australia entered
Especially given that their previous “success” was a plant from a church that is a cult, and we’re not in Europe >!I know that Australia is an “honorary” entrant or some shit!<
Interacting with Eurovision at all is not ok imo. Aside from gleefully hosting and spreading propaganda (one of Israel’s entries the past two years had blatant genocidal rhetoric in it) for a nation committing a genocide, the main sponsor is an Israeli company. Or at least it was in previous years. I haven’t seen anything Eurovision related this year.
Better yet don’t support Eurovision
🇳🇱
Love Jews, boycott zionists
*love semites
That way you include Palestinians as well.
Sure, but I want to mention Jews specifically because Israel and zionists claim to represent them. They don’t
I don’t know why Israel just had to keep participating in Eurovision and pushing so hard for the win.
You know how the competition goes, right? You get huge hype along the lines of “ooh I think Finland has real chance of winning this year” and then, I dunno, Bulgaria randomly wins or something. Every time. There clearly are forces at work beyond our mortal comprehension here, and no nation-state can meddle with it.
It’s because it normalises them. A huge part of their identity and the way the ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and genocide is sold or justified in the west is through this idea that pissrael is a “civilized” western nation. And a big part of that is them joining in fun stuff with other “civilized” western nations.
Pissrael is able to do what they do because their electorate largely believes that what they’re doing is the right thing, even now. There are plenty of polls to show this (aside from actual election results of course). Dispelling pissraelis of this notion plays an important role in ending the apartheid. And we have a historical example of ending apartheid this way. The exclusion from rugby games and cultural events were a consistent generator of “are we the baddies” moments for white South Africans when they had their apartheid. Avoiding those kinds of moments is very important to pissrael.
Anyway that’s how I see it.
Moroccanoil, the ESC sponsor, is despite what its name suggests an Israeli company. So the overall incentive structure there might be a tad skewed.
Also with all the paid votes they spoof across the world they basically help fund the competition twice. Why would the ESC want to stop all that money?
They should make it so you can’t vote for your own country at all. If you vote you vote for any of the others.
Means whoever wins isn’t just the act with the largest domestic audience
Neither juries nor phone-ins have been able to vote for their own country since 1957.
i’m glad they took my feedback onboard so promptly
Eurovision is bland. Don’t touch it.
Better yet. Boycott the genocide supporting asshats completely.
I’ve been a diehard fan since 2009 but I stopped watching 2 years ago. It’s not been easy and I miss the show, but I can’t support this
You didn’t miss much. This year was genuinely bad from a quality perspective. Finland was the only song that had any replay merit, and it was okay.
Regrettably Eurovision is Europe’s largest (unofficial) pride event. It’s a time you can dress up in all your most fabulous attire and queen out, with complete impunity. Allowing the Israelis to steal that from us would be an absolute tragedy. Of course if their vote manipulation actually wins it for them, that’s a different story.
This is blatant pinkwashing. Supporting a genocide is supporting a genocide, and folks watching Eurovision should be deeply ashamed.
Ok, how does Israel being in the competition actually support their war crimes/genocide? Because as far as I can tell the ebu doesn’t actually give them money, and everyone already hates them. As far as I can see the only revenue they receive is from people voting in Israel. Israelis are going to be putting their money towards the genocide one way or another, because Bibi is obsessed with killing everyone and will just take it. So please enlighten my ignorant ass as to what actual benefit the IDF and Mossad actually get from Eurovision?
Gay marriage was legalised first in the Netherlands in Europe. Then Belgium and then Spain. The Netherlands and Spain are boycotting Eurovision.
Maybe we should join the pioneers in pride progress and take a stance against Eurovision altogether.
I’m afraid the campest mass European show has been thoroughly subverted and is now pinkwashing for Genocide.
The people who were supposed to stop that are throughly complicit in making it a celebration of the modern day NAZIsm called Zionism.
A camp NAZI bar is still a NAZI bar.
A gay bar doesn’t become a Nazi bar if one nazi shows up at it. But it does if all the gay people leave.
The only solution is to convince the bouncers to throw the nazi out.
It becomes when it accepts and embraces the nazi despite knowing it is one
Noone is embracing Israel. They are parasitic on the event.
It doesnt take the gay people leaving for it to slide into a Nazi bar. People love to fight to be one of the good ones to people that hurt those they should consider allies and friends.
A space being queer does not excuse it of its complicity.
That’s just you being Prejudiced and thinking human nature is somehow different in gay people.
No its mathematics. If there’s a club with 100 people 1 of whom is a nazi then it is a gay club with a nazi. If all the gay people leave then 100% of the club goers are Nazis and it has become a Nazi club.
You “forgot” the detail that some gays are NAZIs.
Well known example: Peter Tiel.
You’re Prejudiced or, much worse, you think others are Prejudiced when it comes to homosexuality and are using the Israeli pink-washing crap to support Israel in Eurovision, the same Hasbara technique as used to justify mass murdering Muslims (most notably, Palestinians) “to protect homosexuals”.
No, as I’ve previously stated I think it’s terrible that Israel are in Eurovision. But I think if the decent people abandon it, right-wing assholes will rush to fill the gaps.
Bad news fam, Israel has already stolen it years ago, even somewhat turned it into a propaganda for them.
It’s high time those racist, murderous scum are kicked out, or all that fabulous is moved somewhere else.
As it stands now, Eurovision is as hypocritical as it gets. They boycott Russia but bend over backwards for Israel. Palestinian flags have been banned for years now.
The Russian state broadcaster - not the country mind you - was suspended because it and Russia openly violate the EBU statutes, not because of the war. Press freedom in Russia took a nosedive after the beginning of the war.
Belarus was suspended in 2021 for the exact same reasons already mind you. There is also no specific Eurovision suspension, only a suspension from the EBU entirely.
The Israeli state broadcaster and Israel does, as far as I know, not violate these statutes. Or rather, any interpretation that would lead that state broadcaster to be suspended must suspend several others as well. As such, the EBU executive board has no grounds to suspend the Israeli state broadcaster with the current rules.
Even something like targeting journalists in a war zone would not be a violation I believe because the EBU statutes only refer to the country’s own territory. It’s just a war crime.
That’s why the Israeli suspension from Eurovision was put to a vote before the other members last year and not decided by the executive board, like with the Russian and Belarusian broadcasters.
There is no hypocrisy. A country committing genocide does not violate the EBU statutes because they do not concern themselves with anything but broadcasting. As soon as Israel starts being like Russia in that regard there are grounds for suspension.
That is not true, they retroactively changed the narrative why Russia was kicked off. Originally it was about the war.
I’ve looked at a couple of sources online.
Originally Russian broadcasters were only suspended from Eurovision that year because many other members refused to participate.
A month or so later, the suspension of Russian broadcasters from the EBU was announced for the reasons I named above.
But I think one important correction could be made to what I said: It is possible to suspend members from Eurovision for stability reasons. Israel would presumably not be able to be suspended from the EBU entirely like Russia and Belarus were - after all Turkey and Egypt are still members - but a suspension from Eurovision for the same reason as Russia is plausible if enough members refused to participate.
Political statements of any kind have always been banned from Eurovision as far as I know. Flags are allowed in support of a competing country, but because Palestine isn’t part of Eurovision, a Palestinian flag can’t be anything other than a political statement (in the context of Eurovision).
I do NOT agree with Israel’s actions or their inclusion in Eurovision but flags should only be used in support of one of the competing nations. Once you open it up as a political forum for demonstration and protest the entire concept is completely ruined. It’s supposed to be a break from the troubles of the real world.
Eurovision has always been deeply political, despite their official line.
Everything is. You can’t control for the politics of the people voting, but allowing political statements on the stage would be a step too far.
But to reiterate I think Israel should not be allowed to compete, both because of the genocide and the vote manipulation and because they are not in Europe.
but allowing political statements on the stage would be a step too far.
Vs genocidal Israel being represented on stage…
Mmmmmh…
boycotting cant do shit when it’s israel, everyone would have to stop paying their taxes, stop going to the majority of chain shops, stop buying any sort of electronics and start growing their own shit in your own backyard for it to actually work on israel
So don’t even try? You do you my man.
Strategic, targeted boycotts can be incredibly powerful.
Imagine people can only buy stuff from companies that get stuff from Israel, but you know that company A could switch to a different supplier within a few months. So you boycott company A, buying instead from companies B, C, and D that also make stuff in Israel. If you have enough people, this would be ruinous for company A who would be unable to sell their stock for profit, and company A could have no choice but to switch to a non-Israeli supplier to let the boycott end and restore their profits. Then you all buy from company A, pressuring companies B, C, and D to switch supplier.
One of the things that annoys me about the BDS campaign is that it doesn’t do this. People see a huge list of stuff to avoid that they’ve become habituated to and either bounce off it or only do it partially. I’m not saying to retract the list, but it would be great if BDS picked one product off the list and said “if you boycott anything, boycott this”, and kept it there until the company relented.
Do what you can, most can stop buying from major chains and buy electronics unrelated to Israel, switch to FOSS software and not watch Eurovision.
in most electronics there is something made by shitsrael, eastern european originated hitler himself said some shit like “the phone in your pocket is a piece of israel” or something
still. boycotts aren’t about all or nothing. they’re a long term strategy of learning to find alternatives, build up alternative ways of being to what’s presented, and redirecting power in small ways that make a difference when there’s mass engagement.
take for example. someone in this thread referred to eurovision as an unofficial pride event for people who don’t feel safe expressing that identity outside of this period. maybe this year that person goes and watches eurovision at a locally owned bar that’s playing it so fewer screens are tuned in. there maybe they just get to know some other people who are feeling a way about this. further, you can also dedicate a little bit of time looking for explicit queer representation from participating countries on Bandcamp to talk to others about. these decisions, even if they’re not coming from someone who is disengaging from eurovision entirely, are still acts of boycott
That might be an empty set if we are talking about countries who were able to meaningfully oppose Israel. And for countries that condemn Israel once in a while but keep sending weapons and trading with them? Well…
why is Israel even in Eurovision? they’re in Asia
Because the important factor is being in the European Broadcasting Area. This area is bigger than the European sub-continent and includes all countries with Mediterranean coastline and some countries to the east of Israel. Wikipedia has this helpful map:
dark green: Countries which have participated in the Contest at least once.
yellow: Countries which are eligible to participate, but have not (yet) done so.
light green: Countries which have competed in the contest as a part of another country, but never as a sovereignty.
red: Countries which were supposed to compete in the contest but withdrew right before the final.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EurovisionParticipants.svg
As you can see Marokko competed one time, Tunesia and Lebanon had had at one time real plans to compete and Jordan and Irak are also eligible but opt to not participate.
Australia on the other hand isn’t eligible at all but requires a special invitation from the EBU which they have received every year for the last ten years and are likely to receive until the contest collapses.
THATS WHAT IM SAYING (could be because eurovision is funded by moroccanoil)
Not really, they were part of the EBU in the 80s and have been participating ever since. The ESC isn’t really about europe as Australia is also participatin

Unreadable font.
Before I had a smartphone, I used to consume memes in subreddits’ RSS feeds with the Opera Mini browser. The already tiny preview images were scaled down to 140x140 and compressed to 5kB JPEGs by the transcoder. At least the phone didn’t scale them down, the software is incapable of rendering images outside native resolution…

Yes, it’s worse than sans-serif would be at that size but I can read most characters and figure out the rest from context. And you can tilt the phone to adjust the contrast (bad viewing angles on that TFT, significant color changes even between eyes at normal viewing distance). It looks better in person without the moirè and in the dark with the scratches being less prominent.
Dude, your setup must suck…
This is best of Lemmy tier shitposting.
You’ll have to type louder, I’m on WAP from 1997
Why not use the 1 free MB/day my provider gives me? It takes a while to consume it over EDGE. It still works, this is r/me_irl by Hot:

(the text reads “5 hours ago / submitted by s[…] / [link] / [comments]”)I used read so many articles on the bus via RSS… Or listen to FM radio and record music at 32kHz, 4 bits per sample… And I did use Reddit and email despite the utter lack of privacy and security (maybe encrypted in transit but not at the Chinese-owned company’s transcoder). Now I mostly just look up train delays when running between connections (my smartphone has no SIM, data is costly so I save the single MB for that). I stopped treasuring it, the display’s factory protective sticker tore off, resulting in scratches, and it fell on a spade, hence the crack.
There is also some indie development for the Mediatek MRE SoC platform despite Nokia’s sideloading challenges (each app has to be signed with a licenced certificate that only big studios like Gameloft and Soyou have so people use the fallback dev method of signing each app individually with the IMSI in SIM slot 1; reassigning built-in Twitter/Facebook/Yahoo shortcuts in the menu is only possible with hacks built into the NokiaReSing app). The flagship FOSS app is PeanutVxp, a GB© emulator (the optional 2x scaling, which also affects performance (drops below 30 fps) is obviously not a good fit for many games but 2048 is alright)

I have several 3410s and my service provider still seems to allow CSD (digital dialup), although at high prices (0.25 € per minute?! Is that all-inclusive or in addition to call and/or data rates?). They don’t seem to be running any endpoints to dial into anymore but I know a friendly hacker who could set one up on a commercial or Eventphone GSM network, I might be able to go online with it and load her website http://wap.blamba.de/
The Nokia 3410 can also act as an analog modem in case CSD is blocked or there’s an analog line or reencoder in the GSM provider’s infrastructure. Obviously, then the handshaking takes longer and the speeds are lower.
Practice reading archived cursive notes. Then you’ll be more than prepared to read this.
Edit: I want to be clear, this was not meant to be disparaging. There’s centuries of documents written in cursive, and it’s a reading skill that’s mostly been dropped in modern education. If you’re taught that skill, though, this round-hand font is not a problem to read. It is a weird choice for this meme, though.
I can read it fine, I was exaggarating. I write in cursive myself, though it looks like shit because i have dysgraphia. I appreciate the thought tho.
Conveniently, you can’t support your own country.
but… like the uk im also a loser
Only person and only time I’ve ever cared about Eurovision is because Look Mum No Computer is in it and I love his stuff and have followed for a while. Sad he didn’t get to do a live performance on his synth because of the rules tho
